At Ottawa West Dental, we provide nitrous oxide (laughing gas), IV sedation, and general anesthesia to help our more nervous or anxious patients feel more at ease during treatment.

Sedation Solutions for Anxious PatientsWhat type of sedation options do we offer our patients?

We offer nitrous oxide (laughing gas), IV sedation, and general anesthesia to our patients who experience anxiety during dental appointments, or to help patients through long procedures.

What is nitrous oxide?

Nitrous oxide, often called “laughing gas,” is a mild sedative inhaled through a mask during dental procedures. It helps you feel relaxed and calm while staying awake and able to respond. Its effects wear off quickly, so you can usually leave and resume normal activities right after your appointment.

What is IV sedation?

With IV sedation, a sedative is slowly administered through an IV. With this method, you stay conscious, but calm, and may have little memory of the treatment. It’s commonly used for longer or anxiety-inducing dental work, and your vital signs are carefully monitored for safety. Afterward, you may feel groggy and need someone to drive you home.

What is general anesthesia?

General anesthesia refers to medication used to make you completely unconscious during a procedure. Usually reserved for major surgeries or patients who can’t tolerate other forms of sedation, with general anesthesia you won’t feel pain or be aware of what’s happening. With general anesthesia, your vital signs are closely monitored until you fully wake up.

How do I get dental sedation at my next appointment?

If you are feeling anxious or nervous about your next visit to the dentist, let us know. We will make arrangements to help you feel comfortable with the customized dental plans and procedures you need.

Please feel free to ask your dental professional about your first visit, especially if you are feeling anxious, and want more information about sedation options.
