What is a dental implant?

Our dentists perform dental implant restoration by attaching artificial teeth to implants anchored in the bone below the gum line. After the anchor has been surgically placed in the jawbone, excess bone and gum grow around the implant, holding it firmly in place.

An artificial tooth can then be attached to the dental implant. The end result is a strong, secure dental implant tooth that is virtually indistinguishable from natural teeth.

Who is a good candidate for dental implants?

Patients who have lost teeth because of an accident, an injury or poor hygiene can use dental implants to fill the gaps in their smile.

Dental Implants in Ottawa: Our Procedure

We always begin with a consultation to confirm that the patient is indeed a candidate for dental implants. For example, a patient will need to have a sturdy jaw bone structure, healthy gums and good overall health.

Once we've determined a patient's candidacy, we begin the actual placement of the dental implants. During the first appointment, the implant post is placed – the number of posts depends on the number of teeth a patient is having restored.

Once the mouth has had time to heal and the bone has attached to the post, we place a permanent crown on each dental implant.

What are the benefits of dental implants?

The most obvious benefit is a strong and healthy smile. What is not so obvious, however, is that dental implants don't adversely affect the teeth next to the implants. Dental implants don't slip like ill-fitting dentures and they have a high success rate.
