What is oral surgery?
Oral surgery involves diagnosing and surgically treating diseases, injuries, and defects of the hard and soft tissues of the face, mouth, teeth, and jaws.
While we always aim to use the least invasive treatment possible for a dental issue, in some cases, less invasive options are simply not enough, and oral surgery becomes necessary.

The oral surgery services that we offer at Ottawa West Dental are:
Sinus Lifts
A sinus lift is a bone graft performed on the upper back jaw to prepare for a dental implant. It is needed when the bone is too thin or weak, often due to bone loss from gum disease, tooth loss, or natural jaw shape.
Because the upper back jaw is a hard area to access, this procedure lifts the maxillary sinus membrane upwards to create space for the additional bone before it is added.
Biopsies
An oral surgeon performs a biopsy to remove a small sample of tissue from the mouth for diagnostic purposes, such as to test for oral cancer or other abnormalities.
Dental Implants
A dental implant is a small titanium screw that works like a natural tooth root. Implants can be used to replace a single lost tooth or many missing teeth.
After the implant is surgically placed in the jawbone, it bonds with the natural bone to anchor a tooth replacement, such as a crown, bridge or denture.

Nitrous Oxide
Nitrous oxide mixed with oxygen is inhaled through the nose. It calms patients while they stay awake and able to communicate. This can help reduce anxiety, boost pain tolerance, decrease the gag reflex, and make time feel like it passes faster.
IV Sedation
IV sedatives are administered directly into the bloodstream through the vein for the deepest level of sedation without general anesthesia. Our dental team will connect you to monitoring equipment, allowing the dentist to observe your vital signs throughout the procedure.
