What is oral surgery?

Oral surgery involves diagnosing and surgically treating diseases, injuries, and defects of the hard and soft tissues of the face, mouth, teeth, and jaws.

While we always aim to use the least invasive treatment possible for a dental issue, in some cases, less invasive options are simply not enough, and oral surgery becomes necessary.

Our Surgical Services

The oral surgery services that we offer at Ottawa West Dental are:

Sinus Lifts

A sinus lift is a bone graft performed on the upper back jaw to prepare for a dental implant. It is needed when the bone is too thin or weak, often due to bone loss from gum disease, tooth loss, or natural jaw shape.

Because the upper back jaw is a hard area to access, this procedure lifts the maxillary sinus membrane upwards to create space for the additional bone before it is added.

Biopsies

An oral surgeon performs a biopsy to remove a small sample of tissue from the mouth for diagnostic purposes, such as to test for oral cancer or other abnormalities.

Dental Implants

A dental implant is a small titanium screw that works like a natural tooth root. Implants can be used to replace a single lost tooth or many missing teeth.

After the implant is surgically placed in the jawbone, it bonds with the natural bone to anchor a tooth replacement, such as a crown, bridge or denture.

Dental Sedation at Ottawa West Dental

Dental sedation includes various methods used to help patients feel more relaxed during dental procedures. Our dentists can help determine if dental sedation is a suitable option for you.

At Ottawa West Dental, we do everything possible to help patients feel relaxed and comfortable during their dental visits.

Along with offering nitrous oxide (laughing gas) and IV (intravenous) sedation options, we will proceed at your pace, take breaks when needed, and provide calm reassurance when needed.

Nitrous Oxide

Nitrous oxide mixed with oxygen is inhaled through the nose. It calms patients while they stay awake and able to communicate. This can help reduce anxiety, boost pain tolerance, decrease the gag reflex, and make time feel like it passes faster.

IV Sedation

IV sedatives are administered directly into the bloodstream through the vein for the deepest level of sedation without general anesthesia. Our dental team will connect you to monitoring equipment, allowing the dentist to observe your vital signs throughout the procedure.

Platelet-Rich Fibrin (PRF) for Advanced Healing

We use PRF to help you heal faster and more comfortably after surgical services. PRF is a completely natural healing material created from a small sample of your own blood and placed directly at the surgical site.

Benefits of PRF

Some of the benefits that patients experience with PRF include:

  • Faster tissue and bone healing
  • Less pain, swelling, and discomfort
  • Significantly lower risk of dry socket
  • Better bone graft success for future implants
  • Healthier, more natural-looking gum tissue
  • Reduced need for pain medication

How PRF Works

The process is simple. We take a small blood sample just before your procedure and gently process it to concentrate platelets, white blood cells, and growth factors that accelerate healing.

The PRF is prepared chairside in minutes and placed directly where healing is needed. Because it comes entirely from you, PRF is 100% natural with no additives or risk of allergic reaction. Once the PRF is placed in the surgical site, your body will take care of the rest.

PRF represents our commitment to evidence-based care that supports your natural healing ability while improving comfort and long-term outcomes. Ask us during your consultation if PRF is right for your procedure.
